The pull to blog again!
I’m guilty of nostalgia at the best of times but lately, I’ve been feeling a strong pull towards writing, and in particular blogging, for the pure joy of it, just like I did back in the early 2000s when really, that was all we had available to us and before social media strategy was even a thing. We quite literally had no strategy!
As an early online entrepreneur, there were few people and even fewer resources to show us what to do to be successful online so we kinda just did our thing and the people who liked us, hung around and bought our stuff!
We didn’t even know what success looked like because there was very little in the way of a frame of reference, there was no influencer culture or #instalyfeinspo out there to compare to. We had no idea.
For my fitness business, I relied on writing for magazines and newspapers and piggybacking off the back of the websites hosted by the print magazines I was writing for – Health & Fitness, Oxygen, Shape & Women’s Fitness to name a few.
I had an online business when I really had no business BEING online…I just went for it and figured it out as I went. Our options were limited but it kept things simple.
I remember PR was a massive focus for me.
I developed my own system where every week I would write articles, send them to a list of journalists and publications I had created and nurtured and was constantly following up and following up again.
Over time, because I had built great relationships a handful of journalists for big publications and national papers would routinely reach out to me. I had put in the hard yards and it paid off.
A combination of paying for featured articles and PR-generated articles put me on the map and opportunities began to roll in.
I was asked to cast for Australia’s Biggest Loser (I declined) and was interviewed on some fitness-based shows on Foxtel but while I was writing for publications my blog was still always just me writing from my heart.
I tried to post things like “10 Tips For Fatloss” and business-ey-type articles, but I hated it SO MUCH.
Often my blog titles were the date (lol), I had no freaking idea…but I enjoyed it and people were reading and engaging and that was the part I enjoyed the most.
So the plan is to use my blog as a creative outlet.
I’m not keen to write another book anytime soon and I want to write on the socials less and less, if people want to hang out over here that will be amazing, if not, that’s ok too, I’m doing it for me 🙂
But tell me in the comments….do you read blogs?
